Among the Spanish medieval orders of Knighthood, the Order of Santiago was the most important of all. Its foundation was around 1170 a.C., and it was approved by the Pope Alexander III later in 1175 a.C.
The main task of the Order was the surveillance of the longest pilgrimage route in Europe- The Way of St.James- as well as to protect and take care of the pilgrims.
